Heart of Darkness is a cinematic 2D platformer created by Eric Chahi, creator of Another World, one of the forerunners of the genre. Andy is a kid who loves playing with his dog whiskey, especially not enjoying going to school and has a knack for inventing complicated gadgets. Although the game has many fast and furious action scenes, including shooting groups of dark creatures, it is built on a series of tasks that require different approaches, from arcade-style shooting or jumping to interacting with the environment and solving puzzles. Like its spiritual predecessor, the game is simple; Completing one section usually takes Andy to a different location, where another task awaits him.

There are many guns at Andy, though in some places he loses his weapon and relies on the player’s intelligence or quick reaction to survive. Andy also gains magical power, which can be used to plant or destroy trees.
